Just curious,
I honestly prefer travelling by Rail. I live in Scotland so my local TOC (Train Operating Company) is First ScotRail. They run a great service and I’ve had little problems. I hate travelling by road, just today I did so, and I’m now feeling very tired afterwards. Sucks, because we were travelling alongside the West Coast Main Line for most of the journey up. lol.
I’m with you. I like the train when it’s a feasible way to go given time constraints and a reasonable number of connections. I live in northern Italy and go out exploring on the trains most weekends. From here, the night trains are a great option for trips to places like Paris, Vienna, Munich, Salzburg, and Barcelona. Not only can you sleep through the night on the train, but you arrive fairly early in the morning and are within walking distance of the places you want to see – no check-in, going through security, waiting for baggage, travel time to/from an airport. Air travel is fine when distances are longer. either is much easier than driving yourself.

Michael Portillo joined Statesman Rails The Fellsman on 9th September 2009 at Ribblehead Station and departed at Garsdale Station for BBC 2 s Great British Railway Journeys . The train was hauled by 5690 Leander , i have put this video on as it shows some footage i did not use showing Mr Portillo at Garsdale Station and i think the bbc could have shown more of the loco instead of jumping to 46115 and back to Leander .

I’ve decided that attempting to travel across the USA by car (along with my friend) poses far to many risks and potential problems and of course would be far too expensive. I’ve spotted the USA Amtrak rail pass for 45days which seems like a great idea but i would like to know if anyone else out there has done this and is it a good way of seeing the country? I understand there are restirctions to the number of journeys you can take and we are thinking of spending about 6 weeks seeing as much as we can! any tips?????
The car would be much better, and it’s not that risky at all, you just have to plan where you want to go.
I’ve gone across the US with the car from Maryland (east) to southern california (west) following the I-80.
I took the amtrak from northern california to maryland, it just wasn’t the same, but we had a baby at the time so, that was for sure the best way
